Brown betty, is a dish of British origin that can be made in a sweet or savory version, it is a delicious dessert with a lovely texture that you must try!
Ingredients
- 450 grams apples (cored ,peeled and roughly chopped)
- 1/4th Zest of one lemon
- Crumble mixture (combine 1/2 cup of muesli with 1/2 cup rolled oats, 2 tablespoons all purpose flour, 2/3rd cup powdered brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/4th
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
- 25 grams butter(melted) cup caster sugar cup butter.)
Method
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius and grease a suitable oven proof dish.
- Place the apples in a saucepan with the sugar,cinnamon ,lemon zest and 2 tablespoons water and cook for at least 20 minutes at a low/medium heat (or until soft).
- Place the cooked apples in the greased dish and top them with the crumble mixture and butter bake for 20 minutes.(or until golden brown)
- Serve with custard poured on top of it!
- Note: you can add more cinnamon according to taste.
- The custard can be made using custard powder or from scratch.
For The Custard
Ingredients
- 3 egg yolks
- 1 tablespoon caster sugar
- 2.5 cups milk
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch/cornflour
- Vanilla extract
Method
- Whisk the egg yolks and sugar together until creamy.
- Mix 1 tablespoon of milk with cornstarch till a paste forms and keep aside.
- Warm the rest of the milk until nearly boiling and pour over the egg mixture( make sure the milk is not too hot, or the custard will split) with the paste and vanilla.
- Place the bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water and stir until it thickens.
- Strain into a jug and pour over the apples!
